More than 100 Australian fashion companies have risen to dominate the footwear industry, according to a new report.
Key points:The top 100 brands on the Australian Footwear Retailers’ Association’s list include brands such as Gucci, Calvin Klein, H&M and Reebok “Fashion is an industry that can’t be defined by just the top 10 or the top 50, it’s an industry where every industry is on its own,” industry analyst, Andrew Gombert, said.
“It’s about recognising that every industry has a place, that it’s important to recognise the companies that are doing really well and that those companies will always have an impact on the industry.”‘
I feel the need to take responsibility’In a report released on Monday, the report revealed that Australian fashion retailers had seen an average of 6,000 job cuts in the past year.
The retail sector has been hit hard by the impact of the global economic downturn.
In the last year alone, fashion retailers have seen their sales decline by $10 billion and turnover by $5.2 billion.
And the retail industry is set to lose $100 million in value over the next 12 months.
Fashion industry experts have slammed the government’s decision to cut the budget for retail.
“We have a responsibility to our employees and our community, to the people we serve, to keep them safe, to protect them, to ensure that they have the opportunity to succeed,” retail sector manager, Mike Brown, told the ABC.
“I think the government has put a very difficult situation on our shoulders and we need to make sure that we are prepared for that.”
The report said it was “critical” that the industry was able to retain talent and grow the industry.
“We need to keep innovating, we need a workforce that is committed to doing that and making sure that people know that we can be successful,” Mr Gomberg said.
Mr Gomber said the report highlighted the need for a “balanced approach” to the industry, including “a clear vision for what we want to see as a fashion industry in the future”.
“There are a lot of challenges we need for the industry to get to where it needs to be in the coming years,” he said.
